Joan Barata Joins UNESCO Regional Workshop on Safeguarding Journalism as a Public Good in the Digital Platform Environment

Joan Barata participated in the regional workshop Safeguarding Journalism as a Public Good in the Digital Platform Environment in South East Europe, organised by UNESCO and Partners for Democratic Change Serbia (Partners Serbia) in Sarajevo.

The workshop brought together journalists, media organisations, regulators, digital platforms, civil society representatives, and international organisations to discuss the challenges facing journalism in an increasingly platform-driven information environment.

Discussions focused on how journalistic content circulates on digital platforms, the role of content curation and moderation, fair compensation for news, and the future sustainability of journalism. Participants also examined the relationship between digital platforms and regulators, particularly regarding the protection of freedom of expression and media freedom.

A central question throughout the workshop was how to safeguard journalism as a public good while addressing the growing influence of digital platforms over the production, distribution, and visibility of news. The exchanges highlighted the importance of dialogue and cooperation among media stakeholders, public authorities, civil society, and technology companies in building a healthier information environment.
