On 5 February 2026, Joan Barata delivered the lecture “Disinformation and Freedom of Speech in the Euro-Mediterranean Region” as part of the Aula Mediterrània Lecture Series 2025–2026.
The event took place at the conference room of the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), in Barcelona, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and civil society representatives interested in media regulation and democratic resilience.
In his lecture, Barata examined the growing challenges posed by disinformation across the Euro-Mediterranean region, highlighting the delicate balance between countering harmful content and safeguarding freedom of expression. He addressed regulatory trends, the role of digital platforms, and the risks of disproportionate restrictions that may undermine fundamental rights.
