Who Controls Access to Europe’s Media? The Debate Over Reforming the AVMSD

CERRE Academic Co-Director Sally Broughton Micova will moderate a public webinar examining how the EU’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) could be reformed to provide more coherent rules for EU-wide platforms shaping access to audiovisual and media content.

The discussion will explore the changing media environment, including challenges around media visibility, platform dependence, advertising revenues and media pluralism, alongside the growing EU regulatory framework shaped by the European Media Freedom Act, the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act.

The event will also feature the presentation of CERRE’s upcoming issue paper on AVMSD reform, authored by Michèle Ledger, CERRE Research Fellow and University of Namur, with confirmed speakers Carolina Lorenzon, International Affairs Director at MEDIAFOREUROPE, and Rowena Burke, Head of International Content Policy at Ofcom.
