In October 2025, Joan Barata – independent member of TikTok’s European Safety Advisory Council – participated in the platform’s Global Safety Advisory Council summit held in Singapore. The summit convened experts from across disciplines to discuss emerging challenges and best practices in platform governance and online safety.
Barata joined a panel discussion on the global regulatory landscape. The panel featured Akin Unver, Associate Professor at Özyeğin University and lead researcher of the HorizonEurope-funded DE-CONSPIRATOR project, and Brie Pegum, Head of TikTok’s global regulatory and risk team.
Barata currently serves as Senior Legal Fellow at The Future of Free Speech project at Vanderbilt University, Fellow at the Program on Platform Regulation at the Stanford Cyber Policy Center, and Visiting Professor at Católica no Porto.
