SUMMARY:Joan Barata on Media\, Disinformation\, and Free Speech in the Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:The phenomenon of disinformation is not foreign to the Mediterranean region. Local and foreign actors alike make use of diverse communication environments to disseminate content and narratives aimed at shaping public opinion and undermining free access to information. As in other regions\, a sound understanding of the problem—and the development of effective responses—requires close attention to factors such as the role of states as disseminators of disinformation\, the condition of the media ecosystem\, cultural and socio-economic contexts\, the use of disinformation regulation as a means to restrict dissenting voices\, and existing institutional weaknesses. \nWithin this framework\, Joan Barata will deliver the lecture “Disinformation and Freedom of Speech in the Euro-Mediterranean Region” as part of the Aula Mediterrània Lecture Series 2025–2026. \nThe session will be moderated by Pere Franch\, Professor at the Faculty of Communication and International Relations\, Blanquerna-URL\, and is co-organised with the Master’s Degree in International Journalism at Blanquerna-URL. \n📅 5 February 2026\n🕡 18:30\n📍 IEMed Conference Room (Carrer Girona\, 20 · Barcelona)\n🗣 Conference | English

DESCRIPTION:From 11 to 13 February 2026\, the University of Pretoria’s Future Africa Campus will host the International Conference on Digital Platform Governance 2026\, a major global gathering focused on shaping the future of digital governance and online information integrity. \nThe event builds on UNESCO’s ongoing Internet for Trust initiative and follows the first edition held in Dubrovnik\, Croatia\, in 2024. SUMMARY:Adriana Mutu to Speak at the COPEJI 9.0 International Conference: “Governing the Ungovernable?”
DESCRIPTION:14 February 2026 | Faculty of Law\, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași \nMEDEA is pleased to announce that Adriana Mutu has been invited to speak at the 9th International Conference “Legal Perspectives on the Internet” (COPEJI 9.0): Governing the Ungovernable?\, hosted by the Faculty of Law at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași (UAIC). \nOrganised in partnership with the University of Poitiers (Faculty of Law) and developed as an EC2U academic event\, COPEJI 9.0 brings together scholars\, practitioners\, policymakers\, and technologists to examine the pressures that borderless platforms\, autonomous systems\, and rapid technological change place on traditional legal frameworks. The conference adopts a strongly interdisciplinary perspective\, welcoming contributions from law\, technology\, political science\, economics\, philosophy\, psychology\, media and communication\, ethics\, and design. \nThis year’s theme — “Governing the Ungovernable?” — invites participants to explore the evolving interplay between law\, code\, power\, and society\, and to reflect on whether governance systems can meaningfully respond to technologies that increasingly shape\, and at times escape\, human control. The programme addresses a wide range of topics\, including digital governance\, algorithmic accountability\, AI regulation\, transnational enforcement\, digital sovereignty\, and the normative tensions emerging in post‑digital societies. \nMEDEA congratulates Adriana on this invitation and looks forward to her participation in this important international forum.
