DESCRIPTION:9–14 February 2026 | Iași\, Romania \nMEDEA is pleased to announce that Adriana Mutu\, founding member of the network and expert in European media regulation\, will join the 2026 edition of the Go Digital in Law – Winter School as a guest speaker. \nOrganised by the Faculty of Law at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași\, in collaboration with the EC2U Alliance\, the Winter School brings together students\, doctoral researchers\, and early-career professionals from across Europe to explore the intersections of law\, technology\, and digital governance. \nAdriana will deliver a lecture addressing key regulatory challenges in the digital environment\, with a focus on the Digital Services Act (DSA)\, content moderation\, platform accountability\, and the evolving role of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD). \nThis year’s edition is organised in collaboration with the European Campus of City-Universities (EC2U) and brings together the eight partner universities of the alliance: the University of Poitiers (France)\, the University of Turku (Finland)\, the University of Coimbra (Portugal)\, Friedrich Schiller University Jena (Germany)\, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iași (Romania)\, the University of Salamanca (Spain)\, the University of Pavia (Italy)\, and the University of Linz (Austria)\, alongside Umeå University (Sweden) and longstanding academic partners such as the University of Białystok (Poland) and the Faculty of Computer Science at UAIC. \nThe programme is supported by organisational partners including the Legal Clinic Association\, the Doctoral School of Law\, and the Faculty of Computer Science of UAIC\, and benefits from the involvement of the European Commission. \nThe programme includes sessions scheduled between 2–13 February 2026\, and concludes with the international conference COPEJI 9.0: Legal Perspectives on the Internet – Governing the Ungovernable\, where Adriana will also participate. \nMEDEA congratulates Adriana on this invitation and welcomes her continued engagement in advancing rights-based approaches to digital regulation.

DESCRIPTION:The phenomenon of disinformation is not foreign to the Mediterranean region. Local and foreign actors alike make use of diverse communication environments to disseminate content and narratives aimed at shaping public opinion and undermining free access to information. DESCRIPTION:Call for Papers  \n \nHuman Rights and AI-Powered Content Moderation \nCambridge Forum on AI: Law and Governance publishes content focused on the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) from law\, rules\, and regulation through to ethical behaviour\, accountability and responsible practice. It also looks at the impact on society of such governance along with how AI can be used responsibly to benefit the legal\, corporate and other sectors. \nFollowing the emergence of generative AI and broader general purpose AI models\, there is a pressing need to clarify the role of governance\, to consider the mechanisms for oversight and regulation of AI\, and to discuss the interrelationships and shifting tensions between the legal and regulatory landscape\, ethical implications and evolving technologies. Cambridge Forum on AI: Law and Governance uses themed issues to bring together voices from law\, business\, applied ethics\, computer science and many other disciplines to explore the social\, ethical and legal impact of AI\, data science\, and robotics and the governance frameworks they require. \nCambridge Forum on AI: Law and Governance is part of the Cambridge Forum journal series\, which progresses cross-disciplinary conversations on issues of global importance. \nThe journal invites submissions for the upcoming Themed Issue:  Human Rights and AI-Powered Content Moderation Guest Edited by Joan Barata and Natalie Alkiviadou. \nThe deadline for submissions is 31 October 2025. Deadline for final version of originals after review process is 31 December 2025. \nOutline: Artificial Intelligence (AI) equips social media platforms with tools to manage the vast and constantly growing flow of online content\, playing a crucial role in enforcing content policies. Increasing regulatory pressure through laws such as the Digital Services Act While the use of automated content moderation is essential for addressing crimes such as child exploitation and non-consensual explicit material involving adults\, applying AI to more complex and context-dependent areas like hate speech presents significant challenges. Specifically\, while these systems aim to enhance online safety\, they introduce significant legal\, ethical and technical challenges that require urgent attention. In such a sphere\, the growing reliance on AI in content moderation raises critical questions about its impact on human rights and freedoms\, particularly the right to freedom of expression\, privacy and the prohibition of discrimination. \nA key concern is the freedom of expression and non-discrimination\, as AI-driven moderation\, especially for hate speech\, often lacks the ability to grasp linguistic nuance\, cultural context and intent. This can lead to over-removal\, censorship\, and the disproportionate silencing of marginalised voices. Moreover\, biased datasets and insufficient training data contribute to discriminatory enforcement\, disproportionately affecting minority communities and raising serious concerns about violations of free speech. AI-driven content moderation also presents privacy risks\, requiring large-scale data collection that may infringe on users’ rights under laws like the General Data Protection Regulation. Additionally\, as private corporations play an increasing role in governing public discourse\, accountability gaps emerge in terms of transparency safeguards\, due process and redress for wrongful content removals. \nIn addition to this\, social media platforms and other intermediaries are also increasingly offering AI systems to users to facilitate and enhance content creation and improve impact and reach. These new features may trigger new legal debates and complexities around content moderation\, reponsabilities and liability\, as well as regarding the modalities of exercise of the right to freedom of expression and subjects/entities protected. \nIn light of the above\, this themed issue seeks to explore the intricate relationship between AI-driven content moderation and human rights\, with a particular emphasis on freedom of expression\, privacy\, and non-discrimination. By bringing together experts in fields such as law\, philosophy\, technology\, policy\, linguistics and ethics\, this themed issue will foster an informed debate on responsible AI governance in content moderation. Contributors will be expected to present original and relevant research that critically analyzes existing legal frameworks and proposes solutions to mitigate AI bias\, improve algorithmic accountability\, and strike a balance between combating harmful content and upholding fundamental rights. DESCRIPTION:The 10th ECREA ECC will be organised by the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana (UL FDV) and the Slovene Communication Association\, from 23 to 27 September 2024 in Ljubljana\, Slovenia\, under the title ‘Communication & social (dis)order‘. The organizers of the 10th European Communication Conference invite submission of proposals for up to 10 pre-conferences.\n\n \n\nThe organisers call for proposals that contribute to rethinking communication and social (dis)order from the different perspectives of ECREA sections\, networks and working groups. Proposals for individual papers\, panels and roundtables can be submitted to all ECREA sections\, temporary working groups and networks via the ECREA ECC 2024 submission platform until 11 January 2024.\n\n \n\nThe conference will support independent pre-conferences. The call for pre-conferences has now been published. DESCRIPTION:The Centre for a Digital Society invites submissions of unpublished papers for its scientific conference focusing on the evolving role of regulation and regulators.\nIn the rapidly evolving digital age\, the increasing economic\, social\, political\, and cultural influence of digital players has prompted the European Union to propose and adopt a series of far-reaching Regulations. These include the Digital Market Act\, the Digital Services Act\, the Data Governance Act\, the Data Act\, the AI Act\, the Regulation on Standard Essential Patents\, and the European Media Freedom Act. \nThe implementation and enforcement of this emerging EU regulatory framework will bring forth new challenges for Member States\, leading to the creation of new regulatory bodies and expansion of existing ones. This transformation will likely lead to an increase in multi-task agencies and foster coordination between different regulators at both the national and EU levels. \nCall for papers\nIn light of these developments\, this scientific conference aims to stimulate an in-depth discussion of academic papers analysing the evolving role of regulation and regulators in the digital age. The conference welcomes submissions from lawyers\, economists\, political scientists\, and other relevant technical experts\, presenting research within the core areas listed below. \nCore Areas of Interest:\n\nRegulation in the Digital Age: this area delves into the reasons behind the growing government regulation in the digital sphere and evaluates the appropriateness of the emerging regulatory framework. DESCRIPTION:World Forum for Democracy 2023 “Democracy = Peace?”: Call for initiatives\n \nThe World Forum for Democracy is a unique platform for political decision-makers and activists to debate solutions to key challenges for democracies worldwide. By identifying and analysing experimental initiatives and practices\, the Forum highlights and encourages democracy innovations at the grassroots and their transfer on a systemic level in order to strengthen the foundations of democratic societies. The Forum thus contributes to the evolution of democracy towards more participatory and inclusive structures and institutions. \nThe World Forum for Democracy calls for expressions of interest from innovative initiatives\, from all over the world\, aiming at enhancing democracy and contributing to sustainable peace. \nAny public or private organisation is eligible to apply. One presenter for the selected initiatives will be invited to Strasbourg to take part in the World Forum. Travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by the Council of Europe if required. \nSubmissions should be made by answering the questionnaire in the document “Call for initiatives 2023” and sending it to forum_democracy@coe.int by 15 June 2023. \n

A road map for the future \nAl Akhawayn University in Ifrane\, Ifrane\, Morocco\, Oct. 19-21\, 2023 \n \n[PDF Version] \n(See the conference’s Preliminary Program) \nThe International Media Management Academic Association (IMMAA) invites submissions of theoretical and empirical research papers and case studies on all aspects of media management for its 17th conference\, Oct 19-21\, 2023\, in Ifrane\, Morocco. Hosted by Al-Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI)\, the conference aims to bring together academics\, senior and early career researchers\, and professionals in all areas of media management\, new media\, economics\, corporate communication and related fields. IMMAA strives to be a truly international association and encourages participation from all countries in English\, Arabic\, and French (official and spoken languages of the host country). \nThe 2023 IMMAA conference theme is Media Transformation: A Road map for the future. We welcome submissions addressing the challenges and opportunities of media management in the new digital and technological transformation era. We suggest three P axes: \nPurpose: Why and What do media need to transform?\nPeople: How prepared are media institutions and media managers for the transformation?\nProcesses: How should the media proceed with the change? \nWe also welcome topics that engage with the following topics but are not limited to: \n\nBusiness models for media and digital media\nMonetization strategies for content\nAudience engagement and measurement\nSocial media and its impact on traditional media\nThe use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in media management\nThe role of data and analytics in media decision-making\nMedia regulation in the digital age\nThe future of media and entertainment industries\nInnovation\, media entrepreneurship\, and start-ups\nResearch and renewed methodological approaches to study and teach media management\n\nSubmissions of extended abstracts should be at most seven pages or 2000 words (double space\, font 12). The empirical papers should include the research objective and a summary of the conceptual framework\, methodological approach\, findings\, discussion\, and limitations.Submissions of panel proposals should include a 300-word purpose of the panel\, abstracts of 300 words for each presentation\, and a 100-word short bio of each panelist and the panel organizer/chair. \nAll submissions will be subject to a double peer-review process. The best conference papers will be invited to publish their research in the Journal of Creative Industries and Cultural Studies (editors Terry Flew and Paulo Faustino). \nAll submissions should be sent to conference@immaa.org. DESCRIPTION:The workshop\, held on 3 March in Rome\, was an event to commemorate Franco Morganti. \n \nThe conference dealt with the topic of the future of telecommunications in the digital context\, and saw the participation and intervention of leading personalities in the sector at national and European level\, including Roberto Viola; General Director of DG Connect\, Minister Adolfo Urso\, representatives of the Italian Government\, National Regulatory Authorities (NRA’s) and senior national representatives from leading telecommunications companies. \nSpeakers focused on market and regulatory challenges\, dealing in particular with the issue of net neutrality.
