Joan Barata Contributes to International Debates on Media Freedom and Freedom of Expression

MEDEA founding member Joan Barata has contributed to a series of international publications and discussions on media freedom and freedom of expression.

He co-authored the article “Freedom of the media”, published in Internet Policy Review, examining media freedom in digital societies and the growing role of platforms and AI systems in shaping the digital public sphere. Read the publication

Joan also published “The Diverging Interpretations Around the Legal Notion of Hate Speech: a Valuable Contribution By Natalie Alkiviadou Looking Into The Case Law Of The European Court Of Human Rights” on the American Society of Comparative Law Blog, analysing the relationship between hate-speech regulation and freedom of expression in European human-rights law. He also participated in “The Invisible Hand of Censorship: Indirect Restrictions to Freedom of Expression Across Legal Systems”, organised by the Center for Studies on Freedom of Expression (CELE) and the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, addressing indirect forms of pressure and restriction across different legal systems.
