Seminar: The Invisible Hand of Censorship – Indirect Restrictions to Freedom of Expression Across Legal Systems

June 16 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Organized by the Center for Studies on Freedom of Expression (CELE) and the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University (KFAI), this online seminar will take place on Tuesday, 16 June 2026 at 10:00 hs.

The discussion will examine how freedom of expression is increasingly affected not only by direct legal prohibitions, but also by a wide range of indirect restrictions that operate through ordinary regulatory, economic, and technical mechanisms. A central focus of the discussion will be the gaps in current legal frameworks and the implications for developing a more coherent and genuinely global standard for freedom of expression in an increasingly platform-mediated information environment.

The event will bring together leading experts and scholars in the field, including Agustina Del Campo (CELE), Jennifer Jones (KFAI), Joan Barata, and Admire Mare (University of Johannesburg). Coordination will be provided by Matías González Mama, Senior Coordinator for Latin America and CELE researcher.
